About the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF) 2021-2027

The purpose of the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund is to contribute to achieving the environmental, economic, social and occupation-related aims of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), to promote the implementation of European Commission’s maritime policy and to strengthen the international marine administration.

The majority of the funds are granted to the member states through national programmes, which are approved by the European Commission.

The European Commission approved the Danish Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture programme (EMFAF) on the 5th of December 2022. The programme is to contribute to the European Commission’s aims regarding green adjustment, sustainable fisheries administration based on biological counselling, development on land in coastal areas including coastal fisheries, and promotion of distribution. The programme is to contribute:

  • Danish fisheries and aquaculture are included as parts of the green adjustment including promotion of the environmental sustainability and climate objectives,
  • Nature, environment, growth and occupation in both land and city are continuously maintained and developed,
  • The fishing industry is prepared and ready to face the challenges of the future.

The purpose of the Danish Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Programme 2021-2027 is to contribute to the environmental, competitive and socially sustainable progression of the fisheries and aquaculture business and simultaneously support sustainable administration of the seas.

The Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Programme constitutes the framework regarding the economic measures intended for progression of fisheries, aquaculture and environment, which is co-financed by the European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF). It is therefore a prerequisite that the programme and possible amendments are approved by the European Commission, to receive funds from EMFAF.

The concrete purpose of the programme is to achieve the aims of the Common Fisheries Policy. In addition, the programme is to contribute to meet the aims, which the European Commission have established regarding the green adjustment, hereto the European Green Deal. Furthermore, the programme is to contribute to accomplishing the Danish goal of reducing CO2-emission by 70 pct. by 2030. The recommendations from the blue Climate Partnership are included in the Danish programme.

The strategy for the programme addresses four main areas:

  1. Green adjustment
  2. Sustainable administration of fisheries based on biological counselling
  3. Progression of coastal fisheries and of land in coastal areas
  4. Progression of distribution
